LASSA FEVER - DESCRIPTION, CAUSES, AND CONTROL


DESCRIPTION

Lassa Fever was firstly discovered in Nigeria in the year 1969. It is caused by Lassa virus, carried by a specie of Rodents called mastomys natalensis, it is also called Natal Multi - Mammate Rat (i.e Rat with multiple breast, probably 8 or above). It is one of the Viral Hearmorrhagic Fever.
Incubation Period: 6-21 days (1-3 weeks)


Ways of Contacting the Virus

  • Any contact with the Urine, Saliva or

    other Secretion from the specie of Rat named above.

  • Close contact with a Lassa Fever infected person.

  • Eating of Rats : This is because during the process of preparing the Rat, you will surely get in contact with the Urine, Saliva, Blood and other Fluids of it. This can lead to been infected.


  • SYMPTOMS OF AN INFECTED PERSON

      High Fever
      Chest pain
      Sore Throat
      Constipation
      Bleeding in all the openings of the body.
      Deafness
      Blindness
      Continous abortion in Pregnant. for the women


    Who Can be Infected with Lassa Fever?


    Pertaining "Who Can be Infected with Lassa Fever?". Every one (both Young and Old) are prone to be infected with Lassa Fever. With an High risk in the Health sector, ranging from the Doctor, Nurses who take care of infected patient, Laboratory Scientist who test and diagnosis patient's blood.
    During Burial Ceremonies : According to some Traditional Customs & Beliefs,

    some will whisper into the Ear of a dead person. Believing that, by doing that they are sending message to their Forefathers through the dead person.
    Some even believe they need to have feelings of the dead person by drinking from the water used in bathing the corpse of the dead person.
    All these practices are dangerous to Human's health, therefore the partakers are prone to been infected with Lassa Fever.
